I will go over every element that you need to know to be successful on Ebay. I am an Ebay Power Seller with under 300 Transactions, you will rarely find a powerseller with under 1,000 Transactions. I have accomplished this in under 2 years.

This will be as close as you get to a "silver platter".

The Card market on Ebay is like a stock market on a smaller scale. Everything is pretty much similar. Cards sell for thousands everyday on Ebay. Just do some searches.

You will need a computer with a fast connection, I use charter. You will need a scanner. Lexmark's are the best and cheapest. You can use a digital camera, but the pictures aren't as good. Bad pictures could cost you money/less profit. You will need a PayPal Account. You can get to Paypal by clicking on the link below.

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

The reason I prefer selling cards over other things is because they are among the safest and easiest for me. You make a sell, put the card in a bubble mailer, print a shipping label and it's off. If you ship right, you should be able to make 1-2 dollars extra profit on every shipped card. 1-2 dollars adds up. If you can learn to buy and sell cards on Ebay, you can buy and sell anything.

There is risk involved. If you follow and make smart buys, you can dramatically reduce the risk. "Example" If you buy some Kobe Bryant rookies in the middle of the playoff's, this is a stupid buy. A 1996-97 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant Rookie graded BGS 9.5 was sold at $316 on 12/14/2008. The same card, same grade has sold at $495 on 1/23/09 with the playoff's weeks away. If you bought 5 of them in the off season at an average of $316,you would pay $1,580. If you sold them today even before the peak of the season/playoffs at an average of $495 each, it would be $2,475.

Get that out of your 401k. The best time to buy and maximize profit is in the offseason or at the very beginning of the season. If you buy at the height of the season, you will be paying top dollar for the card.

Keys to Look for When Making a Buy

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH

If you fail to research the cards you are buying, you are setting yourself up for failure. Treat your cards like stocks. "Example" You would not want to invest in just 1 stock, you would want balance. Same with cards, If you invested in a single player and your man got injured, you could be stuck with the cards for a few seasons. Instead, invest in 2-3 top players. This dramatically increases your chances and gives you options.

1. Is the card Autographed or Serial Numbered? The more rare, the more money. You will see nowhere near the profits if you buy common cards. On most occasions, the lower serial numbered card and the autographed cards are the money makers.

2. Look for lots. This is one of the only times I will buy common cards. You save tons of money on shipping plus the lots never sell as much as listing the cards as singles.

3. What percentage of a chance does the player have to break records? ESPN.com is a great reference to see daily numbers and leaders in each sport. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/statistics

4. What kind of shape are the corners, edges, sides, surface and centering in. For a reference, do a search for BGS graded cards. They give an Overall Grade and also the Subgrades. This is the top card grader. PSA is Second.

5. Research to sell what other cards similar to it have sold for. The best resource you can have is called "Terapeak". You can get up to 90 days of research on all cards sold. A small investment compared to the time it will save. If you can buy a card that hasn't been listed for 90 days, that means it is more rare and you can set your own price for the card since buyers have no prices to compare it to. This also applies to most low serial numbered cards since most low numbered cards aren't listed in price guides. Buyers only have previous ebay prices to compare to.

Click Below to find out about Terapeak.

Research your competition

6. The biggest price jump is in the players first season on most occasions. The safest way to buy is to at least give the player 1-2 years in his given sport to invest in his cards.

7. How much profit can you make compared to what you bought the card for? Most fail on Ebay because of their seller fees. Ebay is the most powerful/populated internet market. If you sell a card for $200, you will end up paying around $15-20 dollars in fees from Ebay and Paypal + $1-$5 on average to list the item. Always over calculate on seller fees when buying or selling a card to be safe.

8. The most successful way to Buy on Ebay is to bid within the last 2-3 Seconds of the Auctions End. If you bid early you are driving the final price up. Compare the given card you are buying to others that have been listed. Minus the seller fees for what you will sell the card for. My goal on every card I buy is to make at least make $40 profit after seller fees. A free tool to download is called "Ebay Countdown". http://countdown.ebay.com/start_continue.jsp?r=1236293998203

Another Great Resource to place bids automatically is called "Auction Sniper". This service is completely secure and automatically places your bids. Link Pasted Below.

9. Look for errors in card listings. When you perform a search in Ebay, type only the players first and last name. Some sellers list cards and fail to put critical details in the title. Not listing the year of the card and key terms is very common. Here are a couple examples on what not to do. The first example is on the kobe bryant that I bought and resold. Notice the difference in the item titles. The Adrian Peterson example explains how to write a correct listing.

Bad Listing: adrian peterson football card

Correct Listing: 2007 ADRIAN PETERSON TOPPS ROOKIE RC SP /25

You want to have Key Search terms in the listing. The more key terms, the more attention your cards will receive. Key Terms you should have in every listing are shown in the correct listing example. "2007" the year of the card, "Adrian Peterson" players first and last name, RC and Rookie, "topps" the maker of the card, "SP" = short print, "/25" means the card is limited to only 25, "Rookie = RC". You want both of them in your listing, some people will only search Rookie and not RC. If you only have 1 of the 2, they may never see your listing. Also use all "CAPS" in the title, the easier to see, the more views.

The "bad listing" example is very common. This can cost a seller hundreds or thousands on a given card. Feed off of them. Only the strong survive. See what other items they have for sale and if they made any more mistakes. This is usually opposite on high volume sellers. With so many cards for sale, most to all of their cards get more attention compared to those with few to sell. The more you have, the better marketing it is for other cards you are selling.

10. Keep things simple. The only cards I buy are rookies. Non-Rookies make profits also, just not as predictable. To maximize profits, buy mostly in auctions and sell at a fixed price with the best offer option. Fixed price format could take a week. It could take a season. However, if it takes a season, it shouldn't matter if you are making smart buys. The cards should only go up in value barring injury or a disaster.

11. See how many bidders there are. Usually, the more bidders, the more rare or in demand the card is. There are exceptions. Look for high starting prices. When someone lists an item in auction format and set a high price, they usually do not get much attention. You can find deals this way.

12. Last but not least, set up a watch list in Ebay. Before you buy a given card, measure it up to the others you are watching to determine which card is the wisest investment at the time.

"Example" You are watching a football card and a baseball card when the football season has just ended and the baseball season just starting. If you only had money for 1 of the two, you want want to buy the baseball card for short term or the football card for long term. With baseball season just starting, it would give you an option to sell sooner if you wanted to than it would with the football card. You would want to wait to sell the football card until 1/4 through the peak/playoff's to maximize profits. If you wait to list the football card too late in the season, you risk having to hold the card until the following season to make top dollar. Optimum and safe time to sell would be a month or a few weeks just prior to the playoff's.

SELLING

I highly advise buying in auction and selling at fixed price starting out. This is the safest way to make profits. It will take longer to sell at fixed price than an auction, however you don't risk taking a loss. Start with low dollar cards like $10 or $20 to build your feedback before you start buying $100 dollar cards.

Feedback, Feedback, Feedback. Sellers with bad feedback miss out on profits. Treat your buyers as if you were face to face. I usually ship my cards out within 1-2 days of payment. Try to maintain 100% Feedback.

Learn from other sellers. If another sellers card sells low, figure out why. If the sellers card sells for a lot, figure out why. Try to find errors or strong points in the listings. The best times to sell are Thursday and Sunday nights. On most occasions, the best time to buy is everything but Thursday and Sunday. However, you may still find deals on Thursdays and Sundays.

When Selling or Buying, read the daily news on espn.com or watch sportscenter. The more you know, the more of an advantage you have on your competition. "Example" If you were about to sell Tom Brady cards and he had just blew out his knee, you would need to know that, buying or selling.

Marketing: Copy and paste stats and achievements of the player you are selling. A Great Source for this is http://www.wikipedia.org/ or ESPN.com. Another good free marketing tool is called "Auctiva".http://www.auctiva.com/default.aspx. An Example of Using Auctiva Can be found by clicking the link below from one of my previous listings.
